Homemade versions of sauces are a healthy option with less sugar. Salsa, full of fresh ingredients leads to a variety of sugar-free and no sugar added choices claiming to be the best. Here’s a recipe for healthy sugar-free salsa.
More and more people are trying to cut down on refined sugar, trying out low-carb or keto diets. This has sparked demand for salsas without added sugars. Supermarkets offer many products labelled as "sugar-free salsa," "no sugar added salsa," and "salsa with no added sugar." But many of these products contain additives.
If you're following a keto diet, sugar-free salsa is a great option. Traditional salsa recipes might have refined sugars that can disrupt ketosis, so look for salsa recipes called "sugar-free" or "no sugar added" to enjoy the fresh zingy flavours without compromising your diet.
Making your own sugar-free salsa is easy. We use fresh or tinned tomatoes, onions, peppers, chillies and lime juice. You can make a delicious salsa that fits your dietary preferences and health needs. You can make salsa without cooking but the advantage of simmering this salsa recipe is that it will keep much longer in the fridge, at least a week. First we sauté onions until translucent for a great flavour base!
If you use tinned plum tomatoes, there's no need to chop them, just break them apart in the pan.
Then we simmer until the peppers and onions are soft and melted into the sauce, adding vinegar and lime juice at the end.
This will happily keep for at least 2 weeks in the fridge, and the taste intensifies the next day after making! Also the chilli will be slightly milder from the next day onwards :)
Serve with tortilla chips and grated cheese sprinkled over and grilled for delicious nachos!
